Extract from the book "A Lasting Legacy", by Otho R. Stubbs.
Lightning and thunder sometimes frighten cattle and cause them to Stampede. It is night, the only light in this painting is the blue cast caused by the lightning on the herd. Dust is rising from the stampede. Leaning over his horse, the rider is firing his pistol, trying to throw the herd into a mill. The cattle are running into an arroyo, some are trying to stop, others are pushing them down. A big steer next to the rider is trying to shy away from the firing of the pistol. Further back is another rider trying to hold the herd together. You can see the wind blowing by the leaning grass.
